Emergent Objects: Performing Design Invited Colloquium
Thursday 7th - 8th June 2007, University of Leeds.
AIMS OF THE COLLOQUIUM
To share Emergent Objects research so far
To engage experts from a wide range of design fields in a dialogue about the value and potential reach of the Emergent Objects project
To discuss the way Emergent Objects performance perspectives might influence design and designing
To evaluate progress of Emergent Objects so far in the light of contributions from the colloquium participants
For the colloquium, we identified academic and
practitioner experts in the fields of interaction design, experience
design, product design, fashion and clothing, robotics, digital and
media art, engineering, architecture and computing.
We outlined the ways in which we have been using performance
perspectives (theoretical modeling - click here for project briefing notes - ,
processes and practices) through a combination of presentation,
demonstration, participation and performance.
The aim was to generate discussion and examination the 3
sub-projects in the Emergent Objects portfolio, look at how these three
reflect the overarching objectives of the Emergent Objects
project and consider the value to the wider design community of the
concepts and methods presented.
The June 2007 Colloquium marked the half-way point in this 12-month
project. The intention was to use the event as a means of testing and
expanding our understanding and look towards ways in which this research
can most effectively be documented and disseminated to design domains.
Where appropriate, we developed conversations with our invited guests
that continued beyond June. The project culminates with another larger
event in December 2007 and insight gained at the June colloquium will
be valuable in shaping this final event.
